Although these approaches are all valid, the best I have found is to actually look at and address the needs of the organisation in front of you. IT Strategy is just 1 part of it. Look at the capabilities, the competencies, the challenges. Look at the corporate strategy, the business strategy. Talk to anyone and everyone about their own ideas and challenges. Then, yes, do as described here but in a much more targeted way. You only get promoted by adding value where you are. Be realistic, practical and pragmatic. Think outside the box a bit; don't just limit yourself to a vanilla "IT Strategy" box. It's not about being the tallest and best poppy in the field. It's about helping everyone create a meadow.
