Quality management (QM) is a discipline that focuses on ensuring that products and services meet or exceed customer expectations and comply with relevant standards and regulations. QM professionals need to have a range of technical skills to perform their tasks effectively, such as data analysis, quality tools, auditing, process improvement, and quality standards. In this article, we will explore some of the best ways for QM professionals to improve their technical skills and enhance their career prospects.
The first step to improve your technical skills is to assess your current level of competence and identify your strengths and weaknesses. You can use various methods to evaluate your skills, such as self-assessment tools, feedback from peers and managers, performance reviews, and certification exams. By assessing your skills, you can determine your learning goals, prioritize your areas of improvement, and measure your progress.

In my little experience, 1- Have a Mentor 2- find a role model and do some sort of gap analysis - we could even talk to them 3-Plan, Plan and Plan 4-Technical Skills are about textbook knowledge, hands-on experience and attitude - nothing will be good without the other two.

Value-Based Care Executive Advisor for CEOs, CMOs & CMIOs | I design scalable population health strategies incorporating people, process and technology to eliminate waste and reduce the total cost of care
Three practices that have advanced my skills the most are being mentored by a more advanced practitioner, being a mentor, and taking on stretch projects. In 2010, I didn't even know what the 8 forms of waste were much less an A3 or a value-stream map. I was mentored by a former Kodak executive and a former statistician for NASA. One mentor encouraged my progress and the other gave me critical feedback. After a period of 12 months of mentoring, I saved a company 1 million dollars and reduced the lead time from admission to claims paid from 120 days to 33 days. My team was able to improve the entire clinical and business workflows. In addition, we had such an influx of cash that we were able to pay back the board and open another location.

One of the most effective ways to improve your technical skills is to learn from experts who have more experience and knowledge than you. You can seek mentors, coaches, or consultants who can guide you, advise you, and share their best practices with you. You can also join professional associations, networks, or communities of practice where you can interact with other QM professionals, exchange ideas, and learn from their insights and experiences.

Another way to improve your technical skills is to take online courses that cover the topics and concepts that you want to learn or master. Online courses offer flexibility, convenience, and affordability, as you can learn at your own pace, place, and budget. You can choose from a variety of online courses that suit your needs and preferences, such as webinars, podcasts, videos, e-books, or MOOCs (massive open online courses). You can also earn certificates or badges that can demonstrate your skills and credentials.

When it comes to advancing your technical skills, the choice of courses is crucial. Start by pinpointing the exact topics you want to explore and then seek reputable courses that match your preferences. Both online and in-person options are available, so you can tailor your learning experience. Many courses provide certificates or badges to showcase your expertise, ranging from basic certificates to advanced credentials like internal auditing and lead auditor qualifications

If you truly want to grow in this field, online courses will only bring you so far. More effective are classroom trainings, specifically those that explain subjects and then let you practice with actual tools. To me, certificates/badges are nice decoration, but not the evidence I want to see for competence. Find a mentor with whom you can discuss your issues.
Learning new skills is not enough if you do not apply them in practice. You need to use your skills in real-world situations, such as projects, tasks, or problems that you encounter in your work. By applying your skills in practice, you can reinforce your learning, test your understanding, and discover new ways of doing things. You can also seek feedback, review your results, and reflect on your performance to identify what worked well and what needs improvement.

Embrace Deming Cycle - not just concept but practical methodology In QM, the Deming Cycle (PDCA), is not just a concept but a practical methodology that defines growth. Genuine progress arises when we roll up our sleeves and dive into the thick of things. It's not limited to theoretical knowledge; it thrives on hands-on experience and the valuable lessons learned from our missteps. To truly master, we must actively apply our skills, analyze our performance, and most importantly, admit our mistakes. By sharing our experiences, even the ones punctuated with setbacks, we collectively enrich our skill set and drive the field forward. As the old adage says ‘practice makes perfect’

Embrace failure. Try new projects or quality initiatives. Try things that haven't been done before. It might work, or it might fail spectacularly. And if it fails, ask yourself what went wrong. What could you have done differently? Then iterate. If you've tried a new project and it's not really working, drop the project. Stealing from the tech industry, "Fail Fast". Don't hesitate to let go of what isn't working. That'll help you learn faster and get on to things that do work. Last thought, journal your experiences. Writing stuff down improves retention. This helps to solidify the ideas in your mind and make it a permanent lesson.
The field of QM is constantly evolving and changing, as new technologies, methods, standards, and customer expectations emerge. Therefore, you need to keep up with the latest trends and developments in QM to stay relevant and competitive in the market. You can follow industry publications, blogs, podcasts, or newsletters that provide updates and insights on QM topics. You can also attend conferences, workshops, or seminars that showcase the latest innovations and best practices in QM.

Logo qualidade é estar conectado as novas necessidades.

The tools that can help you be up to date with the Quality and Industry trends are: - LinkedIn - join quality groups and follow the posts, connect with professionals from your industry not always experts with "quality" in the role name, LI search engine and its filters should be your best friend. - Meetup - you can join many Quality communities in your country, industry and your city. In this way you will receive notifications about online sessions that can be useful and not so demanding in terms of time. For the local ones, you can join in person and expand your network via direct contact. In this case, the informal follow ups can be even more beneficial.
