In my experience, two key things have helped me pursue the continuous learning needed in a rapidly changing environment. The first is dropping the idea of work/life balance. They are not in competition. It need not be family or work; learning or play. It creates a false choice. The second is integration. There have never been more ways to learn - conferences, podcasts, videos, workshops, community organizations. Find opportunities to integrate learning as an ongoing practice into the things you care about in life. For example, is going to a hands on science center work or play?

Never stop learning. IT changes daily. If you're comfortable, you're doing something wrong .... or getting left in the wake. Learn. Stretch. Take risks.

As a Consultant, there is not a choice but to be updated on what's happening in the industry. My take is as following: - 1) Have a good professional network with whom you are touch personally 2) Forums like LinkedIn help a lot to keep yourself updated on new trends 3) Have a passion for 'Applied Technology' where the businesses benefit from a given technology, which would matter most for a Consultant

In my experience, it's crucial to surround yourself with as many peers as you can. Our industry moves so quickly that it's really hard to always be at the forefront of any new tech or trend. But if you can surround yourself with others, in online communities or groups then you can effectively share the load. It's also really helpful to develop a relationship with other leaders on different topics to help you when required. It's impossible to be a master of all, you run the risk of becoming a jack of all trades and master of none!

Follow other people in your industry and look at what they're reading. Finally, following the major companies - vendors and professional services firms especially. They publish frequently on current topics.

There's never been a better time to experiment with new tools and tech. Building a home lab is easy but no longer required. You can spin up resources in the cloud or run VMs on your PC. Find interesting projects and start building. No one learned to swim by reading a book.

I periodically experiment with new tools and technologies, leveraging my commercial experience to verify which provides real value in production deployments. Making sure you take time out to review yourself and take on coaching is going to be so impactful to your career. We need to understand where we can grow.

Ensures thar you are always open to share and recap you personal plans based on you close networks “moves” and achievements. A regular “360 peer review” can challenge you on your current state and future plans.

Make a support circle whom you share the same interests, it would help to keep you updated and discuss more topics with them.

I think we have lot of information channels to choose from as mentioned. There is no right or wrong, you have to choose your way to stay informed. Beside this, there is one important thing for me: You not only have to get information about new trends and technologies, you also have to prove the information: Talk with other people about this information - test the theory and test your skills with your peers, get practical thoughts, throw it back to your peers or your communities. In my experience this feedback is essential to combine the "information buckets" (information network). My opinion: knowledge without usage is at the end worthless and consuming your time.

To stay up to date with trends, news and points of attention, I read news absolutely every day, I follow big names on my social networks, I interact with posts that make sense with my career and my interests and I am in a continuous search for knowledge, whether through lectures, webinars, events and online or in-person training. In addition to all this, I seek to interact with my trusted network to discuss important topics.
