As a human resources (HR) professional, you have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on your organization and its people. But how can you find meaning and fulfillment in your HR career, especially in times of change and uncertainty? Here are some tips to help you develop a sense of purpose in your HR career.
One of the first steps to developing a sense of purpose is to identify your personal and professional values, and how they align with your role and responsibilities. What are the core beliefs and principles that guide your actions and decisions? How do they match with the vision, mission, and culture of your organization? How do they support the goals and needs of your stakeholders, such as employees, managers, and clients? By aligning your values with your role, you can create a strong connection between what you do and why you do it.

Your personal WHY must align with the work you are doing to have both success and fulfillment. 30 years ago, before I even knew what a personal why statement even was, I sat down and wrote out four items that were important to me: Faith, Family, Community, and putting my beliefs into action. This has been a guide for my entire career which has provided a barometer for me to determine the right opportunities and projects to invest my time. Having work that aligns with my values allows me to do my very best work and give from my heart. HR meets all of my values and is a blessing. I encourage people I meet with who are unsure about what they want to do in life to focus on their guiding principles - their WHY - and let that be the guide.

Another way to develop a sense of purpose is to seek feedback and growth opportunities that can help you improve your skills and performance. Feedback can help you understand your strengths and areas of improvement, as well as how others perceive and appreciate your work. Growth opportunities can help you learn new things, take on new challenges, and expand your horizons. By seeking feedback and growth opportunities, you can enhance your confidence and competence, as well as your contribution and impact.

A melhor maneira de se preparar para uma oportunidade é investir em conhecimento, treinamentos e palestras, a busca constante pelo conhecimento te prepara para possíveis oportunidades. O mercado sempre está em busca de profissionais que estão preparados.
A third way to develop a sense of purpose is to build relationships and networks that can support and inspire you. Relationships can help you foster trust, collaboration, and communication with your colleagues, managers, and clients. Networks can help you access resources, information, and opportunities that can benefit your career and organization. By building relationships and networks, you can create a sense of belonging and community, as well as a source of motivation and inspiration.

I agree, building networks and getting access to professional communities is a very effective way to build your sense of purpose in HR profession, or actually every profession. In addition to the relationship, resources, visibility and other benefits of networking, you will be able to build a stronger sense of belonging to your profession. As you actively participate in those networks and communities, or even take up some roles there, you will be inspired by other experienced members to contribute more to your profession. This goes beyond yourself and the organisation that you work for.
A fourth way to develop a sense of purpose is to find your passion and niche in your HR career. Passion is the feeling of enthusiasm and excitement that drives you to pursue your goals and interests. Niche is the area of specialization or expertise that sets you apart from others. By finding your passion and niche, you can discover what you love and excel at, as well as what makes you unique and valuable.

Taking this opportunity to salute all HR professionals. Be it a front-facing HR professional (Employee relations, HRBP) or a backend HR Professional (HR Analytics, C&B), you would need to find your calling in HR. For me, it has always been putting the H(uman) back into Human Resource. I love the human impact to the organisation. I love seeing employees in their right role and contribute positively to the organisation. I love the empathy and the co-creation of people and business goals together to move the organisation forward, and that is why I chose to be a HRBP, to bridge human and business needs together for the greater good of the organisation!

I cant say enough about standing out in a certain niche area. We all have that one " HR Pro " who we go to for advice on a certain area, because they are the niche expert. And we trust them and their opinion. They have that passion and expertise. The best part about finding your passion is that it doesn't feel like work - its comes naturally. And 100% agree - it creates your uniqueness!
A fifth way to develop a sense of purpose is to make a difference and celebrate success in your HR career. Making a difference means having a positive influence on the people, processes, and outcomes of your organization. Celebrating success means acknowledging and appreciating your achievements and contributions, as well as those of others. By making a difference and celebrating success, you can create a sense of satisfaction and pride, as well as a recognition and reward.

I think, this is the most imporant one. The main thing that differentiates HR from other directions is its strategic role within the company. Of course, finance, audit and other functions can also be strategic, but even when you are a junior in those departments, you cannot feel that you are contributing to the strategic structuring of the company. I always say, "Company management arises and spreads from HR." If management is important to you and you want to be a part of it - HR is your one-stop shop.

I would add that building a network of other HR professionals to lean into and learn from is really beneficial for your development, but also seeing others doing great things, especially those a few steps ahead of you can be a great source of motivation to heighten your sense of purpose.
